MIDLANDS AREA SEASON PREVIEW 2007/8

Written by Graham Taylor Thursday, 06 December 2007

The Point to Point season is due to start on 2 nd of December with meetings in Devon and Hampshire. Nearer to the Midlands however, two meetings are scheduled in that month, at Cottenham near Cambridge on the 9 th and the 30 th. The first local meeting, The Midlands Area Club, takes place at Thorpe Lodge, Nottingham on 27 th January.

As expected local stables are primed to introduce some new young horses whilst anticipating success from proven stars.

Gerald Bailey

The Bailey team have 15 Pointers in their stables at Spratton, on the borders of Northants. Spearheading a strong stable looks to be Denvale and Persian Hero. The former has been bought by Richard Hunnisett who looks set to gain a few successes on this nine year old. Dickie Barrett will take the bulk of the rides whilst Jonny Bailey is hoping to increase his tally.

Mike & Jill Dawson

Mike and Jill Dawson of Upham Lord fame have 4 pointers in their yard. Commanche Hero has now been retired but Sir Story and Virgin Soldier look capable of giving Jill some winning rides in Ladies Opens this coming season. A newcomer here is Vingis Park, obtained recently from Victor Darnell. Another worth noting is Bentoto, an unraced six year old.

Sue and Patrick Hutchinson

Sue and Patrick Hutchinson train at Theddingworth, near Market Harborough. They have 6 Pointers in their stables and these include newcomers, Wild Is The Wind, a six year old, who may be aimed at Hunter Chases and High Gear from the Jonjo O’Neil stable. Nonantais is a French bred 9 year old bought from Mark Bradstock. This one may be aimed at the Cambridge University meeting at Cottenham in December. Daughter Gemma and son Sam look to take the bulk of these rides.

Joan Tice

Joan Tice who breeds and trains in the adjacent village to Gerald and Caroline Bailey has 6 pointers. Two of these are with Jenny Garley at Guilsborough. Teeton Bollinger, who had an exceptional season last year looks the pick of the stable.

Bill Warner

Another stable with high prospects is the Bill Warner/ Judy Wilson partnership who train at Meads Ashby. Heading the stables specialists are the very useful Coolefind, who together with Tallow Bridge are considered for the Hunter Chase scene. Sydneytwothousand, Rathmoley and Murphymeboy have seasonal expectations and a nice five year old homebred from Overbury and Spalease could be promising. The stable will again have the services of top rider Stuart Morris.

Nick Kent

Nick Kent has 14 horses in his stables at Newstead Priory near Brigg. Of these he has taken in eight maidens, purchased at Doncaster sales and privately. He has high hopes for a five year old named Farmer Frank who ran a decent second on his first run last year. Another to note is Vic’s Last Chance who ran third at Cheltenham last season. Simon Walker and Clair Allen will take some rides.

Malcolm Arthurs

Malcolm Arthurs has just the one horse, True Friday, in training at Bedworth. He expects another decent season with the mare, who had two good runs last year. She will possibly go to Thorpe Lodge early season with Richard Armson on board.

Roger Harvey

Roger Harvey has 8 Pointers in his stables at Horton on the Hill. Two of these came from the Doncaster Sales. Watch The Space is a six year old with potential and Cash In Hand is likely to go Hunter Chasing. Although stable jockey Lenny Hicks has now moved to Australia, the accomplished Sarah Phizacklea will be available.

Tim Tarratt

Waltham on the Wolds trainer, Tim Tarratt will kick the season off with 8 Pointers. Sovereign Quest beat a good field at the Melton Hunt Club and looks to be the spearhead this coming season.

A new youngster named Tiger Tim, a six year old named Darn Good, bought from Alan King and seven year old Barrows Pike, who is still a maiden, are all expected to progress.

Antonia Bealby

Chris and Antonia Beelby will have 11 Pointers in their stables at Barrowby, near Grantham and hope to have some success with Eskimo Pie, an eight year old who has performed well in hurdles and chases. They also have two unbroken youngsters and are probably aiming for Ampton as their first venue.

Holly Campbell

Holly Campbell has her stables at Maresfield, near Tilton on the Hill and she starts the season with 9 horses. Bedtime Boys had a slight setback last year but could still produce the goods this coming season. A newcomer is the five year old Minella Boys who was bought at the Doncaster sales and may make his debut at Brocklesby Park. Oscar Buck won a maiden last year and looks another prospect. Jo Docker is likely to take some of these rides.

Laura Pomfret

Also at Tilton on the Hill is the stables of Nick and Laura Pomfret and they have a total of 15 Pointers in their yard, the bulk of these being Maidens. Cameroon was a winner for the stable on his only start last year and could be useful. Two others worth a mention are a nice filly called Smart Mistress and a youngster named Karrie. Mathew Mackley and Scott Pattell may share the rides.

Andrew Sansome

Andrew Sansome starts the season with 4 horses in his yard. Astonville won at Maisemore Park last year and is expected to run when the ground is soft. Irish Hawk is a five year old bred in Germany and Hawthorne Bay, another youngster could be useful later in the season.

Melton Hunt Club Pt to Pt Races

MELTON HUNT CLUB POINT TO POINT RACES
GARTHORPE - SATURDAY 12 MAY 2007

A very good entry of 151 horses has been received for this coming weekend when the Melton Hunt Club hold their annual meeting at Garthorpe, near Melton Mowbray. The course itself should be in excellent condition as ground staff  have already taken the precaution of watering the ground.

There are seven races on a competitive card and these include two championship races. First race is scheduled for 2.00p.m. The Hunt have also included two Pony Races and they will take place at 1.00 pm.

38 horses have been entered for the first race, The M.H.C. Conditions Race and this race has been sponsored by David Brooks and Richard Turner. The Sam Loggin trained Tender Tangle looks to be coming into form having won recently at Brafield and ran fifth in a Hunter Chase. Present leading Garthorpe jockey Stuart Morris is likely to take the ride. Another entry with local form is Harapour who will have the services of his owner/rider Richard Hunnisett.

Mr and Mrs Tim Wood have kindly sponsored the second race, The Intermediate and this has attracted an entry of  27. Richard Barrett could have the choice of three here, all with a chance. It Plays Itself and Teeton Bollinger have already won here at Garthorpe this season. True Legend, from the Bailey yard has also won recently at  Guilsborough. Killarney Prince is another with a chance and ran a good second in a hot Intermediate on this course.

Third race on the card is The MHFA and TBA Mares Championship final. This has attracted a field of 11. This could rest between Fusion Of Tunes, a winner at the Atherstone meeting last week and Flax Hill who was a comfortable winner last month at Upton-on-Severn.

Twenty two horses are entered in a very competitive Ladies Race. Sarah Phizacklea is in top form and looks to be on the form horse, Danaeve, who took a similar race at Clifton-on-Dunsmore. Free, who was second in the same race, looks to have the services of Gemma Hutchinson, also riding in top form. Father Tom is another horse in form and could have Champion lady, Polly Gundry in the saddle, whilst any of Jill Dawson’s two entries plus last years winner, Mighty Montefalco, could make for a good race. Wheat Displays & Exhibitions are the sponsor here.

Marshall Land Rover are the sponsors of the MHC Novices Championship Race. There are fifteen entries here. The Hookie Bookie was an east winner at Dingley and is trained by Jimmy Tarry. It Plays Itself and Teeton Bollinger, both entered in an earlier race look to have a chance if declared.

Nineteen have been entered for The Men Open Race, kindly sponsored by TTS Shipping. Ballyluski looked to have big chance in the Lady Dudley Cup, until running out when leading. The horse has won five races this year but was beaten by Persian Hero, trained by Gerald Bailey, who has this one and Kjetil entered here. Another with a big chance here is Coolfind, a winner of a Hunter Chase this season.

MS International Sponsor the Final race, The Open Maiden Race, which is for 4,5,6 and 7 year olds and run over 2 ½ miles. This race looks wide open but Rathmoley ran  well early season on his only run and is from the Bill Warner yard. Another worth a mention is Call Me A Lady who was beaten a head in a close finish at the Atherstone.

The Garthorpe Racecourse has excellent viewing facilities and is situated 6 miles east of Melton Mowbray on the B676 and 7 miles west of the A1.

Race Report - Quorn Hunt Point to Point Races

Written by Graham Taylor Wednesday, 25 April 2007

Decent Spring weather, good ground conditions and some exciting racing added spice when the Quorn Hunt held their Point to Point meeting at Garthorpe on Sunday 22nd April. Following intensive watering during the last few days ground conditions were considered near perfect.

Two Pony races, sponsored by S.L.B. Supplies were run prior to the Point to Point racing.

The opening race, The Quorn Hunt Members, Subscribers and Farmers Race, kindly sponsored by Mr & Mrs Harold Morton, attracted a field of five. Recent winner Protagonist, was a warm favourite and well ridden by Hanna Watson, the nine year old was soon in command and held off challenges from both Present Moment and Kim Buck.

Christopher Scotney, Designerwear Stores and Mr & Mrs P.Hewitt sponsored the second race, The Mens Open, run over 3 miles 4 furlongs. This race produced a close finish when outsider, Unleash, held a head advantage at the line from the Gerald Bailey trained, Arnold Layne, who had previously won his last three races. The Joe Docker ridden, Nautical Lad took third place. The winner here is now eligible to run in the £10,000 Volkswagen Touareg Championship H.C. Final at Towcester on 14th May.

Only four horses turned out for The Ladies Open Race, sponsored by Robert Whowell & Partners, Chartered Accountants. This was an easy win for the Jill Dawson ridden Commanche Hero, a useful pointer over the last few seasons. However Jill’s task was made easier when jockey, Clare Allen took her mount, Quarter Masters, the wrong side of a marker and ran out.

Six Hills Golf Course sponsored the Open Maiden Race, for 4,5,6 and 7 year olds and run over 2 ½ miles. Eleven horses went to post. This race went to Firion King. Well ridden by Mica Woods, the seven year old made every yard of the running, winning by an easy four lengths. Rootheday and Little Fountain took the minor placings.

The fifth race was The Restricted Race and attracted a field of eleven. This race was run in the fastest time of the day and went to the Dickie Barrett ridden, It Plays Itself, an eight year old from the North Cotswold. The winner took up the running going to the final fence and just got the better of Fusion Of Tunes, who had been prominent throughout. Town & Country Products kindly sponsored this race.

William Hercock sponsored the final race, The Open Maiden Race and eight horses went to post. Pytchley horse, Regal Custom, was a warm order with the bookmakers and under Stuart Morris made all of the running and just held off a strong challenge from Patrick Millington on his Fernie gelding, Dromin. Irishtown Leader finished a length away third.

This Quorn meeting was the third of five meetings to be held at Garthorpe this season and plays an important part in the Garthorpe Riders Championship – 2007 Awards with points scored for wins and placings in all races at the course. Stuart Morris (with 12 points) and Dickie Barrett (11) at present lead the field. This competition is sponsored by The Crown & Plough of Long Clawson.

Two Charity Flat races took place immediately following the final race. Both divisions being sponsored by Fisher German.
